To give some inspiration for the beginner and experiences travellers, someone tells his or her story based on 10 questions.
This time Joyce tells her story.
Who are you?
My name is Joyce. I am 23 years old and living in The Netherlands.
How old were you when you first started travelling?
The first time I count as real travelling was this year. I was 22 years old at that time. Besides that I made a fair share of city trips and other trips.
Where did you go on your first trip?
In March-April of this year I made a solo backpacking trip to the Indonesian Islands, Java and Bali.
Have you ever travelled solo?
My trip to Indonesia was my first backpacking experience and also my first solo travelling experience.
What is your opinion on travelling solo / with someone?
I really enjoyed travelling solo. I was a bit nervous at first, but in the end it turned out to be such a good experience and I recommend it to everyone. Travelling alone makes you more open and you meet more people than travelling with someone else. Besides that you get to know yourself very well, as you have to solve ‘challenges’ yourself.
Travelling with someone definitely is nice as well. At least, if you can find someone that doesn’t tie you down to their demands. You don’t want to go somewhere and not see the things you were hoping to see. Besides that it is nice to have someone next to you when times are tough or when you are a bit homesick.
Did travelling change you as a person? How?
Yes it has. It made me much more open-minded and much more independent. It also made me see what really is important in life. I mean, pretty clothes and fancy stuff is nice, but in the end it brakes or you lose interest in it. I’d rather invest in experiences which will stay with me a life-time.
What is the best/scariest/craziest/saddest or most exciting experience you had during your travels?
The best certainly is my trip to Indonesia. The scariest all have to do with roads. Driving on far to small 2-way roads in the hills of Cornwall and driving on the island of Zakynthos, Greece to this beautiful little cliff beach with the bluest water and great caves. The way to this place consisted of steep hills up and down, hairpin turns and this crazy cliff lurking in the back of your mind, knowing you will fall of when you make a wrong move.
What countries have you visited so far?
The Netherlands (as it is my home country), France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, The UK, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Indonesia
What is still high on your ‘to-go-to’-list?
I would love to visit Norway. See the Northern Lights while laying in the snow, kayaking the fjords and riding a husky sled. Madagascar is also on my list for its nature and its famous challenging road track. Oh and don’t forget the road trip through the United States and riding the Trans Siberian Railway.
If I say ‘travelling’, what is the first thing that pops into your head?
