Indonesia is Burning

One of the most severe fires in human history are burning right now in Indonesia, creating an environmental catastrophe in a region with precious biodiversity, and putting the health of tens of millions of people at risk. Tens of thousands of hectares of forest have been alight for more than two months as a result of slash-and-burn – the cheapest and quickest way to clear land for new plantations. This year a prolonged dry season and the impact of El Niño have made the situation far worse, with one estimate that daily emissions from the fires have surpassed the average daily emissions of the entire US economy.

“The earth in Indonesia is on fire. Companies destroying forests and draining peatland have made Indonesia’s landscape into a huge carbon bomb and the drought has given it a thousand fuses,” said Busat Maitar, Indonesian Forest Project Leader for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

Summary
The price for a flight from Amsterdam to Calgary shows a very typical graph. It starts off low and fairly stable until a few weeks before the actual flight, where prices starting to get higher and the differences each other day increases as well.  If you want to be safe, book at least 3 weeks up front. Willing to take the risk and maybe find that ‘gem’ between all the high prices? Try it. It may work out for you. Best days to book the flight: Thursday and Friday.

Three Peaks Challenge Renewed

“The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland, often within 24 hours. The three mountains are Snowdon in Wales (1085m), Scafell Pike in England (978m) & Ben Nevis in Scotland (1344m).”

This is the definition of the Three Peaks Challenge as discribed on the official website. Amazing isn’t it?! During my trip to The Lake District in England I decided this may be a fun one to do, apart from the ’24 hours’ part. My training started last weekend – my own Three Peaks Challenge. I was blessed to spend three full days in The Lake District in England. Let me take you through them.

Summary
Sometimes there is this flight where the price fluctuation just doesn’t make sense. Here I present you a flight from Amsterdam to Jakarta. In stead of a gradually climbing ticket price, this one starts decreasing 2 to 3 weeks before take-off. Looking at the average price per day shows that you have the biggest chance of getting the cheapest ticket in the second half of the week.
Currently I am tracking another flight from Amsterdam to Jakarta. This one is finished around March which will also be the time I will compare these two so keep an eye out.

Summary
Look at this beauty. The flight price from Amsterdam to Cape Town is so stable it is almost terrifying. Definitely going to track this one again later this year to see if it is like this one again so keep an eye out for the next tracker. Until the second week before take-off the prices are incredibly stable, although the prices per period do vary quiet a bit. Best day to book your flight to Cape Town doesn’t matter that much as the prices don’t vary more than a few euros.

Summary
The flight price from Amsterdam to Sydney was an interesting one to analyse. At 20+ weeks the price stays rather stable. After that you see a little rise after which there is a reduction of the ticket price, although this one is far less stable. Best day to book your flight to Australia doesn’t matter that much as the prices don’t vary more than a few euros.

There isn’t really a specific day to book your flight, as prices vary just a few euros.

Vegetarian Survival: My Experiences and tips

Veg · e · tar · i · an
(NOUN) A person who does not eat meat or fish and sometimes other animal products, especially for moral, religious or health reasons.

No steak or chicken or bacon has ever reached my mouth. OK, wait. Bacon did but besides that ,meat never appealed to me in a way some people are simple ecstatic about it. At the age of 10 I completely stopped eating meat and started my veggie-filled life.

Travelling and vegetarianism may sound like an odd combination. Especially when travelling in meat-devouring countries for instance in South America, or where the language barrier can be an obstacle like the Asian countries. In fact, it isn’t that bad after all. Here are some of my own experiences and tips.

Traveller’s Tales: Jonny

A life of travel. In 1997, at the age of 20, Jonny found that this was what he wanted to do with his live while he was in his first months abroad. And since that moment in that year he hasn’t been doing any different. With numerous of countries visited and loads and loads of experiences gained in the passed few years, Jonny is living his dream.

On his website ‘The Backpackingman‘ Jonny writes about all his stories. Definitely worth a visit!

Could you tell a bit about yourself?

I grew up in a lot of countries due to my father’s work, so I was kind of used to the travelling lifestyle. I am totally addicted to the freedom that comes with it. It suits my personality perfectly. Meeting new people and experiencing things I haven’t tried before never gets boring.

How old were you when you first started travelling and where did you go?

When I reached 20 I got the urge to explore and so I did. I took a flight to Cairo in Egypt and on my second day there landed a job as a film extra in Egyptian movies. I haven’t lived at home since, and have spent the last 17 years travelling and working my way around the world.

Traveller’s Tales: Rob

Rob is a veteran when it comes to travelling. Exploring the world on his own at first, after that with his wife and now as father with a set of new eyes and a fresh mind to see the World’s beauty and all its perks.

Follow Rob on his journeys on AdventureRob.com and definitely read Rob’s tale down below.

Could you tell a bit about yourself?

I am Rob from Portsmouth in the UK. I have been travelling for numerous years mostly around South East Asia but I also spent a year in Australia and a few years in Japan. I have recently become a father so travelling has reduced a little while my budget recovers! I write about my travels on AdventureRob.com and am currently finishing up my first book, which is a novel about a hitman in Japan.

You are born in the UK. Have you played tourist-in-own-country?

Not so much apart from some long drives for fun, but I intend to over the next couple of years. I can tour the country with my Japanese wife who will help me see the place through a traveller’s eyes. She thinks of the UK as the land of Harry Potter for a start!
